How to Design a Deck

With sketch paper, draw your house wall (overhead view as in a blueprint). Locate and draw windows, doors, chimney and A/C unit. Write in measurements like window and door widths, and follow our professional process to design your dream deck.

The following 4 components of the deck are designed separately and then tied together to make your dream deck.

1. Frame Design :

  • Decks can be simple in structure or can include multiple tiers. Usability and space availability dictates the design, for example:
  • Single level deck: great for limited spaces like townhouses. Any size from 100 sq ft up to 400 sq ft.
  • Multi-tier deck: best for single family house with a big back yard space, ideal size starts from 500 sq/ ft and up.
  • Additional functionality and beautification features you may like to consider; hot tubs, arbors, wooden planters, built-in seats, water features, pergolas and gazebos.

2. Flooring Materials and Patterns :

  • In our view flooring is the most overlooked deck component .Your options for flooring material are composites, wood and vinyl .Making the most of their characteristics we can deliver outstanding and beautiful designs for your flooring.
  • Composites: the star of the flooring material, they come with many colors, by integrating and mixing flooring elements we can deliver beautiful design for your flooring.
  • Wood: is the second most requested material .It does need periodic maintenance, staining and sanding. Great to work with to create design and flooring pattern.
  • Vinyl: it is similar to composite but very limited colors and options.

3. Railing :

  • Pressure Treated :
  • The most commonly used wood decking material
  • Least expensive of the material choices
  • Very strong and durable
  • Always used for deck frame regardless of the surface, rail or stair materials
  • Tendency to split, check and warp
  • Starts out greenish/brown, turns brownish/gray
  • Composite Material :
  • Composite material made from wood and plastic
  • Will not check, split, splinter or rot
  • Considered a low maintenance material, annual cleaning required
  • Several colors and multiple textures to choose from
  • Can be installed with hidden or surface fasteners
  • Composite railings & trim available
  • Aluminum Railing :
  • Made of 100% maintenance free Aluminum with a limited lifetime warranty on powder coated finish
  • Available in four unique series of balusters;
